The Marine Corps has a motto “Semper Fidelis” which means “Always Faithful” – to the Corps, to one another, to country.
The word faithful (or loyal) also brings another image to mind…a dog. Dogs are known for the loyalty and unconditional love they bestow upon the humans who welcome them into their lives.
Shawn and Alisa Johnson are a dual-military family who wanted to reciprocate their dog’s loyalty when they were called to serve at the same time in different parts of the world – Alisa in Virginia for six months and Shawn overseas. Alisa desperately wanted to have JD, her faithful Australian Shepherd, near her. Fortunately, she was able to make arrangements with a distant family member (who lived near the Virginia base Alisa was serving) to foster her pup. Alisa was able to visit on weekends, and JD was happy living in the country with his temporary family.
Shawn and Alisa’s experience inspired them to create a solution for fellow service members who found themselves in a similar situation and may not have friends or family to rely on. Thus, Dogs on Deployment was born. A website was built. A Facebook page was started.
Dogs on Deployment is an online, listing resource and network for eligible military members to search for volunteers nationwide who are willing to board their pets while they’re deployed.
